From X-rays to 3D ultrasound imaging for scoliosis patients

Scoliosis is a medical condition that is defined as a three-dimensional spine deformity, most often affecting young people with growing bones. Regular screening can help prevent scoliosis from worsening but the use of X-rays imposes health risk if used too frequently.

Now, a new radiation-free system for scoliosis evaluation — the Scolioscan — has been developed by a team at PolyU’s Interdisciplinary Division of Biomedical Engineering under the direction of Prof. Zheng Yongping. Making use of 3D ultrasound imaging, the device can be used as often as needed to monitor treatment progress. It can also be used in hospitals, clinics, and even schools and has now been patented in different countries, paving the way for more positive outcomes among scoliosis patients across the globe.
