Abstract:
Higher education institutions and educators have become increasingly committed to making assessment and grading more effective in promoting student learning. This has resulted in a strong interest in grading criteria and so-called criteria-based assessment. In this workshop, four common criteria-based grading practices, namely (1) Achievement of subject outcomes; (2) Overall achievement as measured by score totals; (3) Grades reflecting patterns of achievement; and (4) Specified qualitative criteria, will be analysed and discussed. Participants are given the opportunity to find out which kind of practice(s) is/are currently adopted in their departments and schools. The final stage of this workshop is to explore ways to clarify 'standards', to negotiate and arrive at a consensus on appropriate levels for the standards, and to apply the standards consistently in summative grading. New and experienced teachers are welcome to attend.
