Beginning at the End: Why OBE - Can You Be Persuaded of Its Benefits?

Abstract:

OBE (Outcomes-Based Education) has been a university-wide focus for the past two years.  But many questions have arisen in teachers' and students' minds about why and how.

Some of these questions are:

• Deconstructing OBE - what is it made up of?
• Constructive alignment of expectations and outcomes - whose expectations and whose outcomes?
• Is OBE window dressing or a useful activity?
• Who is it useful to and why?
• How is OBE different from what we do now?
• What is in it for you and for your students?
• Why are students reluctant to embrace OBE?
• Why are some staff resistant to the idea of OBE?

This forum will provide ample opportunities for participants to discuss these and other questions on OBE.  Issues raised in the forum will form the basis for a series of workshops to develop staff-originated strategies to encourage students to have more understanding of and active participation in the OBE process.
