Chinese Language and Culture

The programme is a credit bearing programme designed to combine theory with practical experiences. The culture course will be conducted in English. More Chinese will be used as students gain more experience and knowledge in the language. The programme consists of:

Course information

The courses are offered by the Confucius Institute of Hong Kong in collaboration with the Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies. Attendances to all classes are compulsory. They include:

 
Putonghua (Mandarin) for Non-Chinese Students

The subject syllabus is divided into elementary, intermediate and advanced I & II levels to suit different levels of ability. Students will be required to take 1 language course, either CBS 240, CBS 241, CBS 339 or CBS 340, depending on their entry level of Chinese and as recommended by their tutors. Each course carries 3 credits.

The first two levels (CBS 240 & CBS 241) will give you an introductory training in fundamental pronunciation in Putonghua through classroom contact and co-curricular activities. Topics covered include basic greetings, introducing yourself, asking directions, asking prices, talking about time and numbers etc. You will be able to handle simple everyday communication in Putonghua upon completion.

The two advanced courses (CBS 339 & 340) are intended for students who are already in possession of some basic Putonghua training focus on further enhancing oral communication skill and daily conversation skills.

Subject syllabus:

All language courses will be conducted in the form of small group seminars. To supplement classroom teaching, the course will also organize talks on Chinese language and culture. Expert speakers will be invited to talk on the subjects like Chinese customs, Chinese literature and art to enable you to gain a better understanding of the traditional and contemporary Chinese culture and values.

Introduction to Chinese Language, Literature and Culture (3 credits)

This course provides you with a basic understanding of the Chinese language and culture. You will learn about the fundamentals of Chinese language, poetry, Chinese calligraphy and painting, Chinese opera, Chinese food culture and living style. Moreover, you will gain a better understanding of the underlying aesthetic and cultural values, particularly with a reference to the fundamental values of Confucianism and Daoism. Field trips have been included as part of the curriculum so you can relate your theoretical knowledge with existing sites that are a legacy of Chinese culture and civilisation. For example, you will visit the Hakka village in Yuen Long and the Giant Buddha in Lantao.

  2. Characteristics of the Chinese language vis-?-vis other languages
  3. Varieties of Chinese
  4. Introduction to major genres of the Chinese literature (Shi, Ci, Qu, novels, etc)
  5. Inter-relationship between Chinese poetry, Chinese calligraphy and Chinese painting
  6. Introduction to Chinese operas
  7. Basic spirits of Confucianism and Daoism
  8. Manifestation of philosophical thought in Chinese food culture and living style
 
Optional tour
 
2-Day optional Guangzhou Tour 28 - 29 July 2012
(minimum enrolment: 20 students)

This weekend trip to the southern city in Mainland China will take you to some of the historical and cultural sites including the Chen Clan Temple, Bao Mo Garden, Ancient Huang Pu Port and Lychee Bay. The tour will cost HKD1,380 (US$ 180) (Price includes coach fare, accommodation, most meals, guides & admission fees). Please refer to the attachment for the detailed itinerary. The schedule may be subject to changes or cancellation in case of inclement weather or insufficient enrolment.

 
Extra-curricular activities

Field trips have been planned into the summer programme, so that you can explore and learn more about Hong Kong, the City of Life, a metropolis well-known as a melting pot of Eastern and Western cultures and an important gateway into Mainland China. These include three cultural tours to visit cultural and scenic spots like the Hakka Village in Yuen Long, Wishing Tree at Lam Tsuen, Giant Buddha and Po Lin Monastery plus Tai O Fishing Village in Lantau and also the Repulse Bay and Stanley Market on the Hong Kong Island. Also, you will be offered a treat of afternoon tea at a Hong Kong traditional teahouse to enable you to experience the local way of life. All extra curricular activities will be held on Wednesdays. Participation is compulsory and will be counted towards your final assessment.
