Safety of Radioactive Substances
 
Topics:

  1. Forms of radiation.
  2. Brief introduction to ionizing radiation
  3. What are sealed and unsealed sources?
  4. Health effects of radiation
  5. Principles of radiological protection
  6. Legal requirements and radiological protection requirements of PolyU

 
Course objectives:
To equip the attendees with basic radiation safety knowledge to meet the pre-requisite for registration as a registered radiation user in PolyU.
 
Target group(s):
Potential users of radioactive substances (sealed and unsealed sources)
 
All users of unsealed sources and certain kinds of sealed sources must register with HSEO before they are allowed to handle radioactive substances in PolyU.  Only users who have completed proper safety training are eligible to apply for the registration.  Attendees of this training are considered to have met the training requirements.
 
(Similar training given by other organizations may be considered to meet the training requirements.  They should give details of the training to HSEO for consideration of exemption on training requirements when they apply for the registration.)

Manual Lifting and Handling
 
Topics:

  1. Legislation and Code of Practice relevant to manual handling
  2. Basic anatomy of the waist and back and the effect on the back from lifting
  3. Basic ergonomics
  4. Causes of manual lifting injury
  5. Method of correct manual lifting
  6. Stretching exercises 

 
Course objectives:
This course aims at introducing the proper manual handling and lifting methods, basic knowledge on musculoskeletal problems associated with improper manual handling and preventive measures.
 
Target group(s):
All PolyU staff members who want to learn more about manual handling.

Laboratory Biological Safety

Course objectives:
This course aims at introducing biological safety management for laboratory supervisors and equipping users of biological agents with better knowledge on biological safety practices so that they can manage biohazardous agents in good order and work safely in the laboratory respectively.   

Target group(s):
All biological laboratory supervisors and registered users of biological agents who work with microorganisms or other biohazardous substances frequently.

Selection and Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
 
Topics:

  1. PPE as last line of defense
  2. Proper selection and use of common PPE
  3. Applications and limitations
  4. Storage and maintenance of PPE
  5. Demonstration on use (e.g. donning of gloves & respirators)

 
Course objectives:
This course aims at providing basic knowledge on the selection, use, storage and maintenance of personal protective equipment (PPE) commonly used in the workshops or laboratories including eye protectors, gloves, masks, respirators, protective clothing and shoes, etc. It is also crucial for PPE users to learn the correct methods of wearing and application of their PPE through a demonstration. 
 
Target group(s):
All staff members who need to use PPE in the workshops or laboratories.

Briefing for Purchasing Delegates on the Central Chemical Purchasing System – Class A10
 
Topics:

  1. Background of Dangerous Goods Management Team (DGMT)
  2. Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemical (GHS)
  3. Policy of centralized purchase of hazardous chemicals
  4. Procedures of chemical procurement
  5. Use of Dangerous Goods and Chemical Waste Stores Services
  6. FAQ on chemical procurement

     
Course Objectives:
This course aims at introducing the Central Chemical Purchasing System effective since 01 October 2016 for chemical users so that they can purchase hazardous chemicals under a close monitoring of DGMT. Chemical Purchasing Delegates are required to complete this course with satisfactory results in order to complete the registration and obtain eligibility for raising chemical purchase request to DGMT.
 
Target Group(s):
All PolyU staff members who want to purchase chemical.

Laboratory Fire Safety
 
Topics:

  1. Fire hazards in the laboratory
  2. Fire safety control measures in the laboratory
  3. Basic fire safety and fire emergency procedures
  4. Use of firefighting equipment
  5. Practical session

     
Course objectives:
Fire is the major hazard in laboratories with flammable chemicals. This course aims at introducing basic principles of fire prevention and control measures to laboratory supervisors and users. Practical session on the use of firefighting equipment is also arranged in order that the participants will have a better knowledge in managing fire hazards in the laboratories.
 
Target group(s):
All chemical laboratory supervisors and registered chemical users who frequently work with flammable or reactive chemicals.
