Foreword by the Dean of Students

Dear Students,

I warmly welcome you to the Student Halls of Residence of PolyU, as a member of this 3,000-strong family.

PolyU has a very professional Hall Team lead by the Student Affairs Office, dedicated to the provision of a safe, well-managed and happy family environment.

Many of you may find it a totally new experience to enjoy the freedom of campus living as a young but maturing and independent adult.  I trust you realize, however, that such a process of personal development, though full of fun and excitement, also means new challenges to aspiring adults to take on new responsibilities: from self-discipline to time-management to self-respect and respect for others without discrimination.  After all, this is what a healthy holistic education is all about.

Sharing a room with another student can also be a once-in-a-life-time experience for many of you.  It is a great opportunity to live with new friends whose values and customs are different from yours, and to learn the art of compromise for a harmonic and comfortable hall life. This involves a lot of love and understanding among individuals.  Friendship may blossom where you may least expect it.  Personally, many of my room-mates or hall-mates in my university years remain my confidants today.

A hall life is also about “staying tuned” with things happening in the hall and being an active participant in hall activities, through which you will be connected to your hall-mates and share the same hall spirit and culture.

So, enjoy your hall life.  I hope this experience will be among the fond memories of your time at PolyU.

Best wishes,

Prof. Arthur Mak
Dean of Students & Associate Vice President (Academic Development)
