GSB offers research degree programmes leading to the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. The primary objective of the MPhil programme is to educate students at the master-degree level with a view to preparing them for PhD studies in the near future. The PhD programme is designed primarily to prepare students for a career in academic research and teaching, but it would also enable them to enter a research career.
Currently, five areas of specialisation are available:
- Accounting
- Finance
- Logistics and maritime studies
- Management
- Marketing
The PhD training at GSB is broad-based and provides rigorous intellectual foundations that are essential for future success in students' research careers. It requires coursework training of a minimum of 18 credit hours. The coursework requirement includes three common foundation subjects and three core subjects in the area of specialisation chosen by students. Regardless of the specialisation, all PhD students are required to take Research Methodology, Contemporary Topics in Business Research and either Econometric Methods or Research Methods for Behavioural Research. After all coursework requirements are fulfilled, students must defend their doctoral theses. The normal period for completing the PhD study is three years.
