Green PolyU Awards – Green Office programme gets an encouraging response to its Phase One activity

Green PolyU Awards – Green Office programme has received an encouraging response! Close to 30 offices and units across the campuses said ‘yes’ to the University’s call in making sustainability a mainstream part of the campus culture. They are the forerunners in the University’s green office movement as they enrolled and participated in the Phase One assessment under the Green PolyU Awards – Green Office programme.

These offices and units have pledged to take up the challenge over a period of four months during which they proposed areas in their workplaces for green office establishment with practical targets to reach, measured against a reasonably drawn baseline assessment. We believe that these targets will be met with the enthusiastic support from all the staff members of the participating offices who voluntarily undertake and implement green practices in their office operations.

It is obvious that building workplace green culture is gaining momentum across the University. Staff members are involved in small but impactful actions in energy conservation like switching off room lightings and computer monitors during lunch time, after business hours or when the room is expected to be vacant for over 30 minutes. They will take initiatives in bringing in the ‘3Rs’ of being environmentally friendly in their offices to reduce generating waste. They will also be mindful about their printing and photocopying so as to cut down paper consumption, and are becoming more cautious to save water and use less detergent in pantry areas.

Many green office practices are not only eco-friendly, but they are friendly to be shared among co-workers too. We believe that the green office movement will blossom and everyone in the PolyU community will be involved to make a difference together every day.

Let’s give all participants and supporters a round of applause, and get ready for more challenges and wider participation on campus with the upcoming Phase Two of the Green Office programme in 2017!
