Remarks:

  • This exercise is steered by PolyU to further discourage the use of disposable lunchboxes/cups, and to promote a waste-less culture on campus. PolyU will ensure the amounts of charges collected are properly used to finance the BYO discounts at designated catering outlets, and provide financial support if needed.

  • BYO discounts will be standardized to $3 upon presentation of each self-carried food container and beverage container at the designated catering outlets stipulated above during their business hours, while each transaction must reach a minimum of $10 and no more than $6 BYO discount in total will be allowed per each transaction.

  • BYO discount (less $3) is not applicable for prepackaged food and beverage items that are packaged before being offered for sale, including but not limited to salad, sandwich, jelly cup, cherry tomato cup, promotional drink, bottled drink, baked rice on aluminum foil containers.

  • BYO discount (less $3) is not applicable for takeaway food items that come with packaging in bags for sale, such as bread and egg tart.

  • You can enjoy the BYO discount provided that you have your self-carried food container or self-carried beverage container for the corresponding type of food item or drink intended for takeaway purpose.

  • Charges for each takeaway lunchbox and cup at designated catering outlets on main campus are applicable at all other periods except normal lunch and dinner hours on weekdays, and all weekends and public holidays. Catering outlets may differ in determining their lunch and dinner hours. Please approach individual catering outlets for information.

  • Charges for each takeaway lunchbox and cup at designated catering outlets at halls are applicable at all periods.

  • The above measures are applicable till 31 December 2018, and are subject to change and further amendments. Corresponding announcements will be made if changes are in place.

  • For further enquiries please approach individual catering outlets.

FAQ:

Q1 How can I support this trial?

The objective of the trial is to raise awareness and encourage staff and students not to rely on the use of single-use/disposables items. Whenever you dine on campus and at hostels, do consider dine-in and use reusable food & beverage containers and cutleries as your priority. If it is not feasible, try your best to bring reusable containers for foods and drinks. The University has initiated a greater Bring You Own (BYO) discount as a token of our appreciation for your efforts in protecting the environment. On the other hand, the charges for takeaway reminds us of the environmental cost of plastic waste, which it is far beyond a few dollars that we are paying.

Q2 What should I do if I intend to use my own reusable food and beverage containers for takeaways?

Simply present your reusable food and beverage containers to the frontline staff at the designated catering outlets upon the time you make your order, and they will fill your containers.

Q3: How about straws and other disposable cutleries?

Using your own reusable food and beverage containers and show support to this trial can be the first step to a plastic-free living. You are always welcome to make it your habit and refuse unnecessary stuff like straws, disposable cutleries, and plastic bags and carry your own ones.

Q4 How much BYO discount can I enjoy if I bring two food containers and one beverage container for a takeaway meal?

You can get a maximum of $6 BYO discount in total per each transaction, provided that your order/your transaction amount reaches a minimum of $10.

Q5 How much do I need to pay if I request for an extra takeaway lunch box/cup?

You need to pay $1 for each takeaway lunchbox and cup.
