Preperations for First Year in PolyU

Hi Moms and Dads! Soon your children are going to set foot on campus. To let them understand your expectations, we encourage you to communicate more with them well in advance.

Stepping into adulthood, your children need to learn to strike a balance between independence and parental guidance. You may find that they may not want to receive too much attention from you and may start to ask for more personal space. If your children suddenly refuse to take your advice and prefer to make decisions on their own, please do not worry or feel sad. It is a normal developmental stage, and they are learning to be independent and responsible. Together you can set expectations on the frequency and timing of phone calls. Be psychologically prepared that they will tend to call you only during the bad times and when they need your support and care.

Adaptation

It is likely that your children will face a lot of new challenges and stresses in university. Some may lost confidence in themselves as they get to know many other bright students; some may feel stressed about maintaining a good GPA and the scholarship; some may feel alone in such a big campus with different classmates in every lecture; and others may be dealing with sleep deprivation because of heavy workload or simply that their roommate do not sleep till late.

If your children are struggling with these issues, please encourage them to stay positive, give themselves a little time, get engaged with their academic work and regular exercise, join a student club or organization and build a good social network with classmates, hall mates and university staff.

Please remind them that university life is a brand new start. One can leave the past glory and failure behind, look ahead to discover and transform into a new self.

If your children still feel worried and has difficulties in adapting to University life , please encourage them to talk to university counselors for advices and solutions.

Studies

Please stay calm if there is  an initial drop in your children’s academic performance. University studies is a lot more demanding than that in high school and the mode of study is very different. They are required to do independent learning outside of class; and they can easily put their academic performance in jeopardy if they can not manage time well. It takes time for your children to adjust to these changes, to restore self-discipline after such a long summer break, and acquire new self-management skills.

As parents, you may consider offering a hand in the following ways:
