Lifting Appliances and Lifting Gear

Testing and Certification of Lifting Appliances / Lifting Gear

The Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Lifting Appliances and Lifting Gear) Regulations (Cap 59J) stipulates the requirements on the use, operation and, in particular on testing and examination, of lifting appliances and lifting gear. In view that many lifting appliances (e.g. cranes, chain blocks) and lifting gear (e.g. chains, ropes, hooks, eyebolts) are installed and being used on campus, the University has thus established Guidelines on using Lifting Appliances and Lifting Gear on PolyU Campus which is included in the Health and Safety Guide.

Under the Guideline, FMO is committed to assisting user departments by appointing a Competent Examiner to carry out testing and examination of the captioned appliances/gear. In general, users departments should arrange thorough examination of every lifting appliance and lifting gear once in 12 months and 6 months respectively. User departments are therefore advised to inform FMO on every purchase and disposal of lifting appliance or lifting gear so that appropriate arrangements can be made with the appointed Competent Examiner for the testing and thorough examination. In addition, with the supplied information, FMO will be able to keep an updated register on all lifting appliances and lifting gear being in use on campus.

Should you require additional information on testing and examination of lifting appliances and lifting gear, please feel free to contact our FMO colleague at 2766 7089.
