Confined Spaces

Working in Confined Spaces

Working in confined spaces can be very dangerous and sometimes lethal. The main risks are those associated with toxic and/or flammable gases/fumes. The University has treated the matter in a seriously manner and has developed safety systems of work for our staff and contractors working on campus. Details of the systems/arrangements are provide under the Code of Practice for Working in Confined Spaces which are included in the Health and Safety Guide.

Under the Code of Practice, FMO is committed to taking up all the jobs which require staff members (not contractor workers) to work in any confined spaces on campus. With regard to those works carried out by contractors, departments who employ contractor workers will be held responsible for observing all necessary precautionary measures. In this regard, for the jobs to be carried out by staff, departments can seek assistance from FMO.

FMO has established a Permit-to-Work system with a view to ensuring safety for the in-house workers who are required to carry out the works. In order to indicate the system in hand, a flowchart (Appendix A) on working in confined space under the management of FMO is indicated in Appendix A for reference.
