Clinical Waste Collection Services

Clinical Waste Collection Services

Clinical waste can be broadly defined as follows:

  • any dental, medical, nursing or veterinary practice, or any other practice or establishment providing medical care and services for the sick, injured, infirm or those who require medical treatment;
  • any dental, medical, nursing, veterinary, pathological or pharmaceutical research; or
  • any dental, medical, veterinary or pathological laboratory practice.

As clinical waste is potentially infectious and bio-hazardous, it needs to be disposed of in an environmentally sound manner. In the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the segregated clinical waste shall be collected by an appointed commercial clinical waste collector and disposed of at Environmental Protection Department's (EPD) landfills in compliance with the requirements stipulated in the appropriate clinical waste disposal permit.

FMO has committed to selecting the commercial clinical waste collector and coordinate the clinical waste collection services with those user departments who are potential clinical waste producers. Bags marked with "Biohazard" symbol shall be supplied to the identified user departments for their clinical waste package use. Users should place the clinical waste into these bags; seal them properly and store them in a safe place temporarily until the waste is removed by the appointed waste collector. The pre-treatment and package processes should be carried out in full compliance with the practices outlined in the "Practice Notes on the Disposal of Clinical Waste at Landfills" issued by EPD, details of which could be referred to the website below.
