Engineering of Choice
The mission of the Faculty of Engineering is to educate the technological and engineering leaders of tomorrow. From generations to generations, our graduates have excelled as innovation drivers, problem solvers, project leaders, communicators and responsible citizens of a global community, with their achievements manifested in manifold aspects of today’s innovative and knowledge-based economy.
The achievements of the students and graduates testify the success of our commitment to engineering education innovation. Our bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees offer students broad-based interdisciplinary study opportunities to meet the emerging needs of industries. Learning of students is well supported by the University's Work Integrated Education Programme, Preferred Graduates Development Programme, and a range of educational exchanges and learning activities which help students build all-round competencies in engineering, communication, and problem solving, and groom their talents to the fullest potential.
Our Commitment to Research Excellence
Research is an integral part of learning experience. The breadth of our research achievement stretches from earth to space and covers strategic areas with a high level of relevance to industry, services and business worldwide. The Faculty has achieved remarkable breakthroughs in applied research and has contributed to the advancement of knowledge in many frontiers of engineering as well as the well-being of mankind.
The Faculty is part of the team that designed and made the first instrument from Hong Kong that flew in space. Renowned achievements also include developing the world’s first bottom-up high-precision Plastic Micro Injection Moulding Machine, the award-winning Heterogeneous Advanced Wireless Networks, the development of the next generation high capacity optical communication networks, the Advanced Fibre Bragg Grating Railway Monitoring System, the state-of-the-art facilities in Electromagnetic field studies, and the leading nanomaterials research for structural applications. Our commitment to research excellence dedicates to bringing up new horizons and beyond boundaries see our new breakthroughs in various engineering areas. To quote a few:
- Palmprint Security System by the Department of Computing, the world's first system for identifying individuals from their palm, enabling advanced security solutions to be implemented more cost-effectively in a multiplicity of security solutions;
- Smart Sensors design and fabrication by the Department of Electrical Engineering, 2,000 times more sensitive than the well-proven Hall effect sensors; also fabricate plastic magnetic materials for making power supplies which are much lighter than conventional ones;
- High Power-quality Power Supplies by the Department of Electronic and Information Engineering leading to the top IEEE Transactions prize in power electronics;
- The Ultra-precision Machining Centre of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, listed as the designated Key State Laboratory in Hong Kong by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China;
- Sustainable developments research (air pollution and noise abatement, nuclear energy safety and reliability) by the Department of Mechanical Engineering; PolyU being no.2 in terms of the publication in The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (JASA), a top journal in the field of acoustics.
The Faculty's objective of providing knowledge and technologies to the business and industry sectors for economic and social advancement aligns with the University's mission of achieving "academic excellence in a professional context". Notable knowledge transfer projects undertaken by the Faculty have gained local and international recognitions:
