The Faculty of Engineering has developed an impressive portfolio of postgraduate programmes and excels in a range of research and scholarly activities. A strong research publication record demonstrates our contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the frontier of engineering. Our research focuses on the strategic areas with a high level of relevance to industry, services and business worldwide.

We have established a number of research centres to promote and encourage research and development in focused areas that are compatible with PolyU's research direction and strategic objectives. These include research centres in Advanced Manufacturing Technology, Biometrics, Combustion and Pollution Control, Fluid-Structure Interactions, Integrated Product Development, Consortium for Sound and Vibration, Knowledge Management and Innovation, Photonics and Power Electronics. These have resulted in a wide range of engineering applications being successfully established through active partnerships with industry and commerce in Hong Kong, achieved by participating in collaborative industrial projects and providing professional and consultancy services.

Over the past five years, our academic staff members have published over 3,000 journal papers and made some 2,200 international conference paper presentations. During the same period, the Faculty has won external research grants amounting to more than HK$333 million. From 2007/08 to 2011/12, amongst the local institutions, the combined achievement of all of PolyU's engineering and engineering-related departments in the competitive bids to the General Research Grant of the Research Grants Council ranked first in terms of the amount of funding awarded.

In addition to about 300 research degree students, the Faculty currently employs about 310 research personnel including research assistants, project assistants, research associates, postdoctoral fellows, research fellows, project associates, project fellows, senior project fellows, senior research fellows and professorial research fellows. Departments in the Faculty focus their research on areas reflecting their strength and strategic development direction. Their main research areas are as follows:
