Department of Mechanical Engineering
As one of the founding departments of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University since 1937, the Department of Mechanical Engineering has been, in the past 70 years, the forerunner of the vast evolvement of its field. Over the years the Department has pioneered the rapid development in new energy system, transportation, space exploration, health and biomedical systems and environment improvement.
Inventing technologies and machineries to be used in the product manufacturing processes makes the career of a mechanical engineer challenging. However, the more challenging it is, the more fulfilling it can be with the vision to improve the living standard of humans imbued deeply in every mechanical engineer’s mind. With a strategic emphasis on applied research, the Department firmly believes that research is an integral part of academic life. It informs teaching and advances the frontiers of knowledge and technology. The Department’s efforts in research contribute to lifting the competitiveness of industry in Hong Kong and in the world.
Not only contributing to the well-being of the community, the Department is also a nurturing place for future leaders of society, boundless to regional limitation and business nature. Nowadays, it is getting more challenging but satisfying to become a mechanical engineer. Through working as a team player which is inevitable in every profession, a mechanical engineer will always be all-rounded.
A mechanical engineer is also playing a crucial role in various spheres of industry with the basic IT and design skills as well as analytical knowledge. The encouraging news is that mechanical engineering is no longer a male-dominant field; women are getting more opportunities to demonstrate good communications, product design and project management skills in the field.
The Department is famous for its international focus and actively encourages collaborations with overseas institutions. To foster international collaboration,
the Department has been very active in inviting internationally well-known academic figures to participate as guest lecturers and in organising international conferences. The Department has also published numerous research reports on world-renowned publications. The Department facilitates international exchange programmes for students through a strong network with various partner institutions all over the world and provides a platform for students to acquire global horizons and invaluable experiences in their university lives.
