Department of Electrical Engineering

The production of electricity is vital to the development of both Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland. The demand for well-qualified electrical engineers is rising. The Department of Electrical Engineering has established a very good reputation for their commitment to high standards in teaching, research and other scholarly activities. The study programmes offered align with both international technological advances and local needs. As a result, the number of qualified applicants considerably exceeds the number of places available.

The main academic activities of the Department are in power systems, power electronics, machines and drives, fibre optics, control, instrumentation and automation, microprocessor applications, software engineering, and circuits and fields. Their postgraduate, undergraduate and Higher Diploma programmes span a wide range of areas in electrical engineering. Students have a wealth of choices and flexibility in pursuing the most appropriate education to suit their specific needs. They also have the opportunity to study for a double-degree programme in business administration and engineering.

Graduates of the Department find numerous employment opportunities, such as electrical engineers in planning and design, manufacturing and installation, and in the maintenance and servicing of electrical plants, equipment and systems. Graduates are able to choose from a wide range of challenging and rewarding careers in CLP Power Hong Kong Limited, Hong Kong Electric Co., the Mass Transit Railway Corporation, as well as engineering consultancies and contractors, other large engineering organisations and government organisations such as the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, the Water Works or the Drainage Services Department.
