Faculty Ranked 42th in the World for Finance and Economics Research

The Faculty has been ranked 42nd in the world for its Finance and Economics research by a study published in the Journal of Financial Economics 93 (2009) 353, 356. The rankings are based on the average research rankings provided by 11 previous studies over the period 1970-2001. The research productivity is based on the 36 economics journals and the top five of the finance journals used by the earlier ranking studies.

The Polytechnic University is the only university in Asia and Australia to make the cut in the ranking of the top 50 universities in the world.

Professor Edwin Cheng is Most Productive Author in Half a Century

Professor Edwin Cheng of the Department of Logistics and Maritime Studies is the world's most productive author of research papers on production and operations management (POM) from 1959 to 2008. This was among the findings of a study entitled, "An Assessment of World-wide Research Productivity in Production and Operations Management" published in August 2009 in a special issue of the International Journal of Production Economics.

The study on global POM research performance was based on papers published in 20 core POM journals. During the period, 44,881 authors from 125 countries had 63,776 papers published in these journals.

Professor Cheng has a total of 182 papers published in POM and an average citation of 10.25 per item.

Dr Wing Lam Receives Best Paper Award at the International Business Research Conference

Dr Wing Lam of the Department of Management and Marketing received, on 17 April 2009, the Best Paper Award at the Tenth International Business Research Conference. Her paper, entitled "I Will Help when I Have the Power to Help", was co-authored with Dr Ziguang Chen of the City University of Hong Kong.

Dr Lam was also awarded fellowship of the World Business Institute, Australia during the conference.

Seminar on The Future Development of Hong Kong Maritime Industry

The IMC Frank Tsao Maritime Library and Research & Development Centre hosted its first seminar on 19 August 2009. Speaking at the seminar, themed The Future Development of Hong Kong Maritime Industry: Challenge & Opportunity, were Professor Judy Tsui, Dean of the PolyU Faculty of Business, Dr Kevin Li, Director of the Centre, Mr YK Chan, Chairman of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (Hong Kong branch) and Mr Conrad Li, Deputy Director of the Centre.

The Centre, officially opened in May this year, is supported by the Hong Kong Maritime Industry Council, the Marine Department of the HKSAR government, PolyU and IMC Hong Kong International Shipping and Transport Logistics Foundation Ltd.

GSB Talk on The Genius of Warren Buffet

Robert P. Miles, an authority on Warren Buffet and Berkshire Hathaway, discoursed on Buffet's value investment and his management philosophy at a talk on 4 September 2009. The event, titled The Genius of Warren Buffet: The Science of Investing and the Art of Managing, was organized by the Graduate School of Business (GSB). Originally intended for students of the GSB's Master of Finance (Investment Management) programme, the talk attracted academic staff and students from the schools and departments of the Faculty.

Miles hosts workshops and presentations in North America, Europe and Asia, Africa and Australia on Warren Buffet, leadership, management and investment.

Emotional Branding and Retail Experience Workshop

The Asian Centre for Brand Management (ACBM) held, on 11 September 2009, an Emotional Branding and Retail Experience workshop to explore the rise of the Emo-economy and the role of emotions in branding.

Mr Roland van Kralingen, Founder of the Dutch brand innovation consultancy INNOA, cited examples of how retail brands made effective use of emotions. Mr Jerry Gelsomino, Principal of the marketing consultation and brand coaching company FutureBest, elaborated on how designers evoke positive emotional response from consumers. The over 100 participants included managing directors as well as brand management, marketing, retail sales, design, product and business planning managers and teachers in related fields.

ACBM was established in 2005 by the Faculty's Department of Management and Marketing.

Ms Chole Tang Earns Best Intern Award of New Youth, New World 2009 Summer Internship Programme

School of Accounting and Finance student Ms Tang Man Ting, Chole received, on 26 August 2009, the "Best Intern Award of the New Youth, New World 2009 Summer Internship Programme". She spent the summer with the brand management department, sales department and retail outlets of Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Co., Ltd in Beijing. As a group leader, Chole also coordinated programme activities.

The programme took around 150 Hong Kong undergraduates as interns in state-owned or Hong Kong-based corporations in Beijing, Shanghai and Dalian. The interns attended seminars and visited government bodies and private enterprises as part of their training programme.

Ms Winnie Leung Wins Silver Award in Career Kick-off Competition

Ms Leung Wing Yee, Winnie, 2009 graduate from the Department of Management and Marketing, won the silver award in the Career Kick-off Competition. Her video created to apply for the virtual position of management trainee with a multinational corporation was selected "My Favourite cME Video".

The competition, hosted by HeadlineJobs.hk, was open to 2008 to 2010 graduates from universities in Hong Kong and overseas. It involved virtual job application with a CV, a video and an interview of short-listed candidates.

PolyU Education Info Day

The Faculty participated enthusiastically in the PolyU Education Info Day on 26 September 2009. On top of an exhibition showcasing programme features and all-round education, there was a series of Faculty lectures to enhance prospective applicants' understanding of the development of Hong Kong economy, the shipping and aviation industries as well as economics and business education. Info seminars held by the schools and departments covered prospects in the logistics profession, managing and marketing in challenging times, and the training that the Faculty provides in accounting and finance.

The Info Day is organized annually by the University's Academic Secretariat to familiarize JUPAS (Joint University Programmes Admissions System) applicants with the education provided and life at the University.
