The PolyU places paramount importance on the teaching of students and the creation of a congenial environment to facilitate their quest for knowledge.
Student Population
The PolyU is the largest UGC-funded tertiary institution in Hong Kong in terms of number of students enrolled on UGC-funded programmes.
In the 2008-09 academic year, the total enrolment on programmes funded by the University Grants Committee is 14,875 by headcount, including 13,360 full-time and 1,515 part-time students. Of these, 1,199 students are enrolled at postgraduate, 9,579 at undergraduate and 4,097 at sub-degree level.
In addition, 13,218 students are enrolled on self-financed and externally-funded programmes leading to PolyU awards.
Student Services
The Student Affairs Office offers a wide range of services to cater for the well-being of students and to enable them to achieve a higher level of academic standard and personal development. These include counselling on career and personal growth, financial assistance for students in need, and a Foundation Programme in Physical Education to encourage participation in sports.
The Office also develops and co-ordinates a comprehensive Complementary Studies Programme to help students develop interpersonal skills and broaden their intellectual and cultural outlook.
Health services available to full-time students include out-patient medical consultations and physical check-ups, etc., provided by the University Health Service, as well as subsidized dental care. First-line medical services provided by the University Health Service are also extended to staff members and their families.
Graduate Employment
The overwhelming majority of our degree graduates have successfully made a head start in their career, with merely 1.4 per cent still seeking employment six months after graduation. The University’s 2007 Graduate Employment Survey, conducted by the Student Affairs Office, found that 97.8 per cent of the 2,514 respondents were either engaged in employment or full-time study last December. Among the employed graduates, 86.3 per cent had secured their first job offer by the end of August 2007. The average monthly salary of all employed degree graduates rose by 8.9 per cent from $11,826 in 2006 to 12,881 in 2007.
"Preferred Graduate" Development Programme
In response to employers' demand for more "ready-to-work" graduates, the University introduced a unique summer internship programme to groom graduates preferred by employers. More than 1,100 Partner Companies and Supporting Organisations have joined the Programme since its launch in 1997, and over 9,300 students have benefitted from this Programme. Placements are available in Hong Kong, Chinese mainland, Japan, Korea, Australia, Europe and North America.
Partner Companies are invited to enter into an agreement with PolyU and we will provide them with an agreed number of students in disciplines that match the needs of the companies.
