The Council
The Council is the governing body of the University. Established under the PolyU Ordinance, the Council has 29 members, comprising the President and Deputy President of the University as ex-officio members, 20 lay members from the business, financial and industrial sectors, and the professions, two Deans of Faculty, three elected staff members, a member from the alumni and an elected full-time student.

The Court
The University Court was established in late 1995 as the supreme advisory body to Council on matters of direction, with a view to promoting the well-being of the University. Headed by the Court Chairman, the University Court consists of eight ex-officio members and up to 36 appointed lay members.

The President, as chief executive of the University, is responsible to the Council for the management, conduct and administration of the Institution and the discipline of students. He is assisted by the Deputy President and five Vice Presidents who oversee the areas of academic development, academic staffing and resources, management, partnership development, and research development.

Senate
Senate is the highest authority and takes decisions on all academic-related matters within the University, including, inter alia, the offer of taught and research programmes; the admission of qualified students to relevant programmes; and the conferment of awards to students who successfully complete these programmes. Senate is chaired by the President, and its membership includes representatives from all Faculties and academic Departments as well as from the student body. Senate has under it a number of Faculty/School Boards, and standing committees looking after various policy/functional areas.

Academic Structure
The University has 26 academic departments/units grouped under six Faculties and two independent Schools. Each Faculty has a Faculty Board and is headed by a Dean of Faculty.
