Micro-embossing Equipment for Precision Optical MicrostructuresGold Medal Principal Investigator: Dr Li Li-hua, Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering

Nowadays, there is a huge demand for small lens with high resolution in advanced optical systems. However, the production cost using conventional technology is high, yet the lens produced has relatively low precision.

PolyU researchers therefore developed a novel micro-embossing equipment for manufacturing precision glass lenses with high image quality and resolution required for state-of-the-art optical instruments and devices.

Adopting a novel molding design with graphene-like coating and PolyU-developed heating technology, the equipment could heat up the optical glass precisely and quickly with low energy consumption, while reducing thermal expansion and deformation of the mold. It can be widely applied in various fields – from astronomical devices, national defence, medical scanning, to consumer products such as cameras and mobile phones.
