Led by Prof. Daniel Shek, a four-member team from the Department of Applied Social Sciences (Dr Yu Lu, Dr Cecilia Ma, Ms Yammy Chak and Dr Lin Li) was bestowed with the 2018 University Grants Committee Teaching Award (General Faculty Members/Teams category) in recognition of its contribution to teaching and learning. This is the fifth UGC Teaching Award received by PolyU scholars since its introduction in 2011.

In 2010, the team launched the Leadership and Intrapersonal Development (LIPD) Initiative in the University’s undergraduate curriculum for all first-year students with a view to developing their personal and social competences, and their sense of social responsibility through experiential learning.

The LIPD Initiative has also been extended to benefit more students through collaborations with other tertiary institutions in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and countries along the Belt and Road. Over the years, the LIPD team has served more than 35 organisations including schools from primary to tertiary levels, as well as non-governmental and community organisations, benefitting 36,000 students.
