School of Design graduating student Lo Kin-pan was named James Dyson Award National Winner for Hong Kong! With the innovative design of POD - a dual-function lifesaving furniture, he will compete in the international round of the contest against shortlisted projects from 22 regions.
Inspired by Hato, the super typhoon that caused severe flooding in Hong Kong and Macau last year, Kin-pan came up with the creative design of a bench for home which can be transformed into a two-person lifeboat in case of floods, integrating “disaster prevention” into daily life. Utilising lightweight, low cost and durable materials, POD is expected to benefit families of poor countries and regions prone to flooding.
