Recently, PolyU and Vision Science and Technology Co. Ltd. entered into a licensing arrangement to manufacture the Defocus Incorporated Soft Contact (DISC) lens invented by a PolyU research team led by Profs. To Chi-ho and Carly Lam of the School of Optometry to retard myopia in children. The lenses will be tailor-made according to optometrists’ prescription to match the needs of individual users and provided via a network of authorised optometric clinics.

DISC lens is a multi-zone soft contact lens that provides clear vision and, at the same time, projects blurred, out-of-focus (defocused) images onto the retina to slow down excessive eye growth in myopia. A two-year clinical control trial showed that DISC lens effectively retarded myopia progression by about 60% in Hong Kong schoolchildren aged 8 to 13. Details>>
