Dr George Ho at the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering has developed two Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-based smart healthcare systems, namely a drug management system and an electronic nursing service management system.

The RFID drug management system can detect errors made during drug dispensing and issue alerts when expired drugs, error in dispensing, drug allergy and contraindications are detected; thus preventing drug-dispensing errors and improving the accuracy in the drug dispensing and replenishing process.

The electronic nursing service management system enables the management, recording and tracking of nursing services information with real-time service monitoring and alert features. Healthcare workers can access patients’ service checklists simply through smart cards and store and update the data instantly in the centralised database, enabling immediate remedial actions.
