The PolyU community is saddened to learn that Prof. Cheng Siwei, the renowned economist and PolyU Honorary Graduate, has passed away in Beijing on 12 July at the age of 80.

Prof. Cheng, whose distinguished career spanning chemistry, economics and management science, excelled in both academia and politics. He was best known as one of the driving forces behind the development of venture capital on the Chinese mainland, which had earned him the accolade as “the father of venture capital in China”. Also, he had many high-profile commitments serving the nation.

In 2000, Prof. Cheng was conferred a Degree of Doctor of Business Administration, honoris causa, by PolyU, in recognition of his significant contribution to the development of China’s economy and his exemplary efforts in pursuing “lifelong learning”. His motto “to behave with integrity; to do things conscientiously; and to study industriously” and his unrelenting spirit to learn and serve have greatly inspired students and peers alike to contribute to the betterment of society.

Prof. Cheng had also staunchly supported the activities of the University by serving as Honorary President of the Bauhinia Cup Outstanding Entrepreneur Awards scheme in 2002, 2004 and 2007 and as Consultant in 2012. He shared his insights at various international forum organized by PolyU and contributed his invaluable global perspectives and insightful advices to the PolyU International Advisory Board as a founding member since 2010.

The PolyU community will always remember Prof. Cheng as a dear friend and partner and offer the deepest condolences to his family. Details>>
