In the Kwun Tong back alleys improvement project under “Energizing Kowloon East”, Jockey Club Design Institute for Social Innovation participated in conducting feasibility research, naming alleys and designing indicating system, with an aim to attract pedestrians with the revitalized alleys and relieve the traffic on main streets. To revitalize 18 sets of alleys, PolyU design students proposed naming the alleys as “18 Makers” to pay tribute to former industrial workers and to retain memories of the manufacturing industries in Kwun Tong.

Also, local and international artists are invited to embellish the alleys with their artistic creativity in the form of graffiti, neon lighting etc. During the first phase, various artistic treatments, including road re-surfacing and wall embellishment, will be embarked in six sets of alleys to turn them into artistic hallways.
