The year 2014 marks the 30th anniversary of the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics at PolyU. To celebrate its achievements on geomatics education and research in the past three decades, the Department has organized a series of events including a kick-off ceremony graced by the Hon. Paul Chan Mo-po, Secretary for Development, and a symposium titled "Geomatics education and research: challenges and opportunities" which was attended by over 200 academics and industry experts from Hong Kong and overseas.

The Department is the forerunner of land surveying programmes in Hong Kong. Over the years, the Department has nurtured a large pool of talents who have become movers and shakers in the field, contributing to the development of Hong Kong. On the research front, the Department's expertise in heat island effect solutions, reduction of air pollution, satellite positioning and navigation technologies, and lunar mapping has been recognized internationally.
