PolyU trio named “Ten Outstanding Young Persons”

PolyU wins championship of aquatic meet

Alumnus represents HK in world summit

PolyU is proud to have a postgraduate student, a young professor and an alumnae bestowed with the prestigious award of “Ten Outstanding Young Persons” this year. The award recipients (in alphabetical order of last name) and their profile are as follows:

Mr Fung Ying-ki is a Paralymic fencing gold medallist. He has once lost the use of his legs as a child after infection with a virus, which posed damage to his spinal cord. However, he has overcome his disabilities with stamina and won five gold medals in the previous Paralympics Games. He is currently a full-time student of Department of Rehabilitation Sciences and will soon complete the Master of Physiotherapy in late 2013.

Prof. Tong is recognized for his passion and distinguished accomplishment in innovation and applied scientific research in neuro-rehabilitation for stroke patients and the elderly. Over the years, he has made great strides in developing a wide range of rehabilitation devices. His innovative work on rehabilitation robot system “Hand of Hope” was the first Hong Kong invention to have received the grand prize in the 40-year history of the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, making Hong Kong internationally visible in this emerging area in healthcare technology.

Fashion designer Cecilia Yau completed her Bachelor’s degree in 1994. After gaining honorary result at ESMOD International Fashion University in Paris in 1997, Cecilia earned her opportunity to participate in major shows such as the Parisian Designer’s Collection and held her own fashion show Mod Aphrodite at Mortcert in France in 1998. She subsequently set up her own business Cecilia Yau Couture which specializes in making evening and bridal gowns.

The organizer has only selected eight winners for the title of “Ten Outstanding Young Persons” this year. The judging panel was chaired by Prof. Frederick Ma and panel members included Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
