A delegation led by Court Chairman Prof. Roy Chung, comprising 27 members from the Court and Council, senior management, researchers and staff members, went on a one-day trip to Guangzhou on 10 November 2011. The trip aimed to let members witness in person PolyU’s research contributions at Canton Tower and learn more about the successful business model of our alumnus and Court member Prof. Liu Sing-cheong’s enterprise.

The group first visited the Canton Tower, the tallest TV tower in the world, which has made use of the mega-structure diagnostic and prognostic system developed and managed by PolyU and Guangzhou’s Sun Yat-sen University.  The delegation also heard a presentation by Prof. Ni Yiqing of the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering on how the system was put to use for monitoring the safety of the landmark structure.

In the afternoon, the group toured the offices of Prof. Liu Sing-cheong, Founder and Chairman of Evergreen Real Estate Consultants Ltd. and My Top Home (China) Holdings Ltd. Both companies are market leaders in the real estate service industry in the Mainland, providing comprehensive land and property development consulting services, real estate, mortgage and property finance guarantee and refurbishment services. Apart from introducing the creative concepts behind the specially-designed offices, Prof. Liu also shared his insights on innovation and his valuable entrepreneurial experiences. All participants found the trip eye-opening and inspiring.
