Learn for me, not my teacher.

The Examinations are now Finished |
|
I’ve now finished, I’m not sure how well I’ve done but at least I’ve tried my best and have learnt a lot. I have enjoyed my study, even though it was often very tough, but after you’ve learned difficult concepts, you feel good about yourself.
My supervisor highly praised my work yesterday. She said that I am able to solve problems in my work and she’s very impressed by the way I handle my clients. She knows that I have been studying part-time at the University and said that I have obviously learnt a lot and I have the potential to become Sales Manager when I have more experience, I’m very happy about that.
Looking back, I regret the fact that I wasted much of the three years studying for my bachelors degree that I didn’t learn much from it. I passed but I could have learnt so much more and done so much better. Even though it looks good on my resume, I can see that I could have performed so much better. Sadly I can never have such an opportunity again as I am now working with responsibilities and commitments that I did not have when I first went full-time to University. Still, better later that never, I now have the right attitude towards studying and this has helped me a lot in improving the quality of my work. Education is so important in life, I only wish I had realised it when I fist went to University.

Halfway through the Examinations |
|
I think I’ve done quite well, thus far, most of the questions have required us to apply the theories we’ve learned to case studies. It’s seems almost the same as what I have to do at work, so that’s really good.
From my previous studies, I understand that grades are not everything, it’s what you’ve learned that matters and how you can apply this knowledge to your work environment.
If all you do is just to fulfill the requirements of getting a pass grade and forget it all afterwards, even if your grades are fine, you’re still wasting your time at University. The most important thing is how much you’ve really understood what you’ve learned. If you’ve actually understood, it will always stay with you help you at work. Therefore now, I have to make sure that I understand the concepts and be able to apply them to different situations. So after the examination, I’ll still remember them and come away with knowledge that I can apply to my job.

2 Days before the Examinations |
|
I’m now finishing my revision, I’m practically done, I just need to clarify a few concepts then I’ll be OK.
These few weeks during my preparation, I felt easier than the times when I was studying for my bachelors degree. I guess it’s because I have reviewed and consolidated the topics I learned right after each class. I try to clarify points that I don’t understand as soon as possible and never ignore the problems that I have. So that after every class I can understand what my teachers are saying. That ultimately makes my revision easier.
Today at work I came across a problem with one of my clients. I thought about what I’ve learned from the Risk Management subject I was taking. Consequently, I’ve came up with a contingency plan which impressed the client. I’m so proud of what I’ve done and am so pleased that I bothered to understand the subject.

7 Days before the Examinations |
|
I have been studying for my examination throughout the semester and the examination in only a week away. I’ve tried to read through my notes and written down the theories that I don’t understand. Maybe I’ll ask my teachers about these. I know some of my classmates have formed study groups in the library. I’m thinking of joining them.
The classes I’m taking now are really useful to my job. I really didn’t pay attention before, I just attended all the classes and did the minimal work for the maximum result, I call it the “Min-Max” principle. I just remembered the key points for the examination and then forgot them all afterwards.
When I first went out to work, I found that many theories were actually applicable to the real world. I needed this knowledge for work but I’ve forgotten everything from my classes and wished I paid more attention and really understood what I had been taught. It’s a shame.
Now I have gone back to university to learn something useful for my career and have to make the most of it. Studying is no longer something that I was forced to do, I am here because I choose to be here.
Alright, I have to stop here, it’s study time!
