Enhancing Teaching and Learning in Post-graduate Social Work through Portfolio Assessment

Aims and Objectives

It proposes to develop a three-year action research to experiment on the use of portfolios to facilitate the teaching and learning outcomes of a post-graduate social work programme. Specifically, the project aims to achieve the following objectives:

  1. To review the strength and weaknesses of current assessment methods used by the post-graduate social work programme in social work.
  2. To design an action experiment on the use of portfolios as an assessment instrument for this post-graduate programme.
  3. To systematically document the processes of implementing and evaluating the usefulness of portfolios in promoting teaching and learning quality.
  4. To disseminate experiences, insights, and good practices gained through the action experiment to other teachers of all universities in Hong Kong.

Highlights of project outcome

  • Teacher can use portfolio as an effective feedback system by providing timely response from teachers, making individualized attention to students’ learning, forging teacher-student collaboration

  • Teacher can use portfolio as an effective tool in promoting a genuine interest in students’ quest for a deeper and reflective learning by promoting self-motivated learning and discovery; and facilitating continuous self-assessment of progress

  • Teacher can use portfolio as a tool for enhancing students’ critical thinking ability by providing systematic clarification of ideas, and promoting critical reflection, and formulating action plan after reflection

A student’s response reveals the many facets of learning gained from the course:

  • "I think, the portfolio and action learning group help me achieve my learning in the following ways:

    • I become more motivated to read and research on reference materials;
    • I become more open and actively discuss and exchange opinions and ideas with other classmates;
    • Throughout the process, I have been critically analyzing and reflecting upon my own knowledge and past experiences;
    • I have developed an open mind when participating in group interactions;
    • I learned to embrace diversity in expressions and opinions, rather than pursuing in a single unanimous agreement during group discussions; and
    • I become more tolerant and appreciate other people's perspective, and beware of their feelings."
