Continuing
search for building advancement
The
Faculty of Construction and Land Use (FCLU) held a three-day
international conference on building technology from 4 to
6 December as a finale for the University's 65th Anniversary.
Officiated at by Prof. Poon Chung-kwong,
President of PolyU and Mr Keith Kerr, Chairman of Provisional
Construction Industry Co-ordination Board, the conference
was one of the firsts of its kind to be held in Hong Kong.

"Known
for its rapid growth and as a gateway to China, Hong Kong
has impressed many with its fine buildings and its state-of-the-art
infrastructure such as the 158 billion worth Airport Core
Construction Projects completed in 1997. Other ongoing projects,
including extension of the existing subway and railway systems,
have also made international building experts to set their
eyes on Hong Kong," said Prof. Ko Jan-ming, Dean of
FCLU and Chairman of the Conference Organizing Committee.
Prof. Poon took the opportunity to announce
establishment of joint ventures between FCLU and leading
universities of the Chinese mainland. These collaborations
include a Joint Research Centre for Structures and Foundations
with Zhejiang University, a Joint Research Centre for Information
Technology in Construction with Tsinghua University and
a Joint Research Centre for Water and Wastewater Treatment
with Harbin Institute of Technology.
About
250 delegates took part in the event. Through various seminars
and discussion sessions, participants were encouraged to
shed light on advances in construction, architecture, surveying
and engineering. Discussions were focused on the three main
themes of the Conference, including structures and materials,
information technology and environmental technology. |
