Don’t miss this once-in-a-year opportunity!

As communicated in our last issue, this year’s Notebook Ownership Programme, jointly organized by ITS and the Students’ Union, will soon commence on 30 July 2011. A wide range of Lenovo and Acer notebooks, sub-notebooks and tablets are offered at discounted prices to PolyU students, staff and alumni.

Notebook Collection & Delivery Service



To avoid the long queue at the time of notebook collection, it is recommended that you collect your notebook before 6:00 pm if possible. Based on past experience, the waiting time would be much longer after 6:00 pm on weekdays.  

You may also consider using the optional door-to-door delivery service at HK$150 within Hong Kong areas (additional charges apply for delivery address located on Lantau Island, Ma Wan, Discovery Bay and other outlying islands). 

Special Note

Please note that this special Notebook Ownership Programme is offered exclusively to PolyU students, staff and alumni. Each staff, student or alumni member is allowed to purchase ONE unit of notebook, ONE unit of sub-notebook and ONE tablet during the promotion period.

You are also required to produce your PolyU student / staff card or other relevant proof for warranty services as such services would only be provided to the original purchaser.

The new PolyU Connect service, based on Microsoft’s Live@edu solution, will soon replace the existing Campus E-mail System as the University's official communication channel with students in the new academic year.

Not yet activated your PolyU Connect account? ACTION NOW to allow yourself time to familiarize with and enjoy the very rich services of this new e-mail and collaboration platform in preparation for the phasing out of the Campus E-mail System. 

 

PolyU Connect Login ID

To activate and access the PolyU Connect service, you need a separate login ID other than your NetID.  

Your PolyU Connect Login ID is in the form of: <NetID>@connect.polyu.hk

You can activate your PolyU Connect account at: https://connect.polyu.edu.hk/activate. For security reason, you are requested to change the initial password assigned to you at first time login.

 

Activate Your PolyU Connect Account to Win an xBox 360



To encourage early adoption and familiarization of the new E-mail System, a total of 5 sets of xBox 360 with Kinect will be given away to the early adopters of the PolyU Connect service.

3 lucky students have already received their xBox 360 during the past few months. The remaining 2 sets of xBox 360 will be given away in August and September, and all new students  joining PolyU in the 2011/12 academic year will also have the opportunity to participate in the lucky draw.

So, ACTION NOW to: 

  • Log in to your PolyU Connect account and change the initial password to activate the service, AND;
  • If your are a current student, ALSO forward your Campus E-mail account to your PolyU Connect account

Protecting the University’s Sensitive Information
 

 

Safeguarding the University’s sensitive information is just as important as protecting your own personal information. You may have questions about your role and responsibility in protecting the University’s sensitive information. Here are some suggestions on how you can contribute:

  • Information should be classified in terms of its value, legal requirements, sensitivity and criticality to the University.
  • All sensitive information should be collected, processed and transmitted solely for legitimate business resources.
  • Access to sensitive information should be limited to authorized individuals.
  • The retention and disposal of sensitive information should be practiced in accordance with their defined schedule.

 

Disposal of information

A critical part of safeguarding sensitive information is properly disposing them when they are no longer needed and their retention period has expired. The followings are some suggestions on disposing information residing on different storage media:

  • Disposal of Optical Disc

Any CD/DVD/CD-Rs which contain sensitive information must be shredded or otherwise destroyed. Breaking or scratching a CD is not sufficient.

  • Disposal of Computer Equipment

To avoid the disclosure of sensitive information, you must wipe the hard disk of all computer equipment before disposal. Some guidelines on how to erase the data are available here

  • Disposal of Paper Documents

All documents containing sensitive information should be disposed of in a secured shredder or placed in a secure bin for shredding.

 

 

 
 


 
IT Orientation Workshops for Students
 

 

At the start of each academic year, ITS will offer a series of IT Orientation Workshops to all full-time and part-time students.

These 1-hour workshops, to be held at the Student Computer Centre (SCC) at the Li Ka Shing Tower, will introduce the wide range of central IT facilities and services available to students including:

  • PolyU NetID and NetPassword
  • PolyU Connect Service – the University’s new email system
  • University Portal
  • Student Computer Centre Service
  • e-Learning Platform
  • Academic Unix Cluster, myStore, myWeb & mySurvey
  • Wired and Wireless Network Access
  • Help Centre and Hotline Services

The Orientation Workshops this year will be held from 24 August to 5 September 2011. Separate sessions may also be arranged for students of individual departments should there be sufficient demand.

Beware of Phishing Trap
 

 

Recently, a number of users have received the following phishing e-mail purporting to be sent from "WebMail@PolyU”:

The recipients are requested to download an attached web page to confirm and update their accounts. 

If you receive a similar e-mail, DO NOT respond to the message and open the attachment. In case you have already responded to the e-mail and have provided your user credentials, please reset your account password as soon as possible.

Please also be reminded once again that ITS WILL NOT ask users to provide their account password through e-mail.

Tips Against Phishing Attacks


To avoid being ‘hooked’ by phishing e-mails, always remember the followings when handling e-mails:

  • Registered financial institutions such as banks normally WILL NOT request users to confirm or update their password or any personal information by clicking on a link and visiting their web sites.
  • If you receive an unexpected e-mail saying your account will be shut down unless you confirm your information, DO NOT reply or click any links in the e-mail body. Contact the concerned organization to confirm the truthfulness of the mail and to get advice.
  • Even if you believe that the e-mail is genuine and want to check out the web site, DO NOT click the link embedded in the e-mail. Instead, open your web browser and type the URL in the address field. This will save you from being unknowingly redirected to a false web site hidden behind the URL.
  • If you suspect that you have mistakenly surrendered your personal or financial information at a phishing site, contact your bank, credit card company or the related organization immediately.
