2009 Notebook Ownership Programme – Fujitsu Notebooks at Discounted Prices for PolyU Students, Staff and Alumni
 

 

Each year, ITS will, in partnership with the Students' Union, invite vendors to make special offer on notebook PCs to our students, staff and alumni. The annual notebook purchase programme is very well received by the PolyU community and over 11,000 notebooks were sold in last year’s exercise.

A new round of notebook purchase programme will commence in early August to provide a wide range of Fujitsu notebooks at highly discounted prices. Models available this year range from mini notebook to the high performance models, offered at discounted prices from HK$2,780 to HK$12,800.

Free Anti-Virus Programs Recommended for Student Use
 

New computer viruses, worms, trojans, etc. are found everyday and an anti-virus program is the first line of defense for personal computers. To help students combat virus infections on their home computers which are running a wide range of operating systems and software versions, ITS has conducted evaluation and testing on a number of popular free anti-virus software tools and the followings are recommended for student use:

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
avast! Home Edition
Avira AntiVir Personal

Please refer to the respective product websites for more information of the tools. Please also note that these free anti-virus software are restricted for home and non-commercial use only.

ITS will continue to evaluate new anti-virus freeware available and recommend suitable solutions for students. Updated information will be posted under the ITS website. As for staff users, the McAfee anti-virus software is centrally provided to all staff for use on University-provided PCs and please contact the ITS General Office (Ext. 2413) for details.

Hands-on Workshops on ‘How to Assess the Security Level of Departmental PCs’

 

 

Following the 'IT Security Workshop on Risk Assessment' and the ‘Departmental IT Security Questionnaire Survey’ conducted in April and June 2009, a series of Hands-on Workshop on 'How to Assess the Security Level of Departmental PCs' will be offered by ITS in end July.

Targeted for departmental CLOs, IT Security Officers and System / Web / Lab Administrators, these 3-hour workshops will highlight the basic technique for assessing the security level of departmental PCs and provide hands-on practice for identifying the security risks / vulnerabilities of PCs which are connected to the departmental LAN.

Departments / offices have been invited to nominate colleagues responsible for IT security to attend the Workshops, in order that the risk factors and security vulnerabilities of the departmental PCs could be appropriately identified and duly addressed. 

More IT/IS security awareness and management training initiatives are being planned to upgrade the competence of staff in handling IT security issues. We count on your continuous support and participation in the upcoming programmes on IT security to be lanuched by ITS.

GroupWise 7 Series: New Layout Scheme and Navigation Bar
 

 

A new version of GroupWise client, version 7, has been installed on all new staff PCs running on Windows Vista. This new version of GW client comes with many new and enhanced features and in the coming issues of ‘Get Connected’, we will introduce some of the major enhancements.

 

New Layout Scheme

To help colleagues to more easily adapt to the new version of the GW client, all new staff PCs have been, by default, set to use the GW 6.5 layout scheme. If you wish to switch to GW 7 layout scheme, click Tools > Options > Environment from the menu. Then select the Appearance tab and choose Default under Scheme.

 

 

 

 

New Navigation Bar

In GW 7, there is a new Navigation Bar (Nav Bar) which is designed to facilitate quick access to the folders that you most frequently use.  By default, the Nav Bar contains Home, Mailbox, Calendar, Sent Items and Contacts.  You can customize it to show or hide different folders by clicking the down arrow on the left of the Nav Bar and select Customize Nav Bar.

3 quick access buttons are available at the end of the Nav Bar which enable users to easily control the display or hiding of the Folder List, Quick Viewer and Main Menu.

As the new Nav Bar already includes Mailbox, Calendar, Sent Items and Contacts, you can simplify your folder listing by only showing those folders that you have created under Cabinet. To do so, select View > Folder List > Simple Folder List from the menu.

IT Orientation Workshops for Students
 

 

At the start of each academic year, ITS will offer a series of IT Orientation Workshops to all full-time and part-time students. These 1-hour workshops, to be held at the Student Computer Centre (SCC) at the Li Ka Shing Tower, will provide the up-to-date information on the central IT facilities and services available for student use including:

 

The Orientation Workshops for this year will be held from end August to mid September. Separate sessions may also be arranged for students of individual department / office should there be sufficient demand. For details and registration, please call the ITS Help Centre at 2766 5900.

 

 

 
 


 
Reminder: Phasing-out of Dial-up Modem Service
 

 

As previously announced, the PolyU dial-up modem service will be phased-out starting from the 2009/10 academic year, as the demand for the service has become less and less during the past few years.

With the rapid development of broadband Internet service in recent years, high speed residential Internet connection services are offered by the ISPs at low cost. Taking into account the decreasing usage rate and the cost-effectiveness in maintaining the service, the dial-up modem service will be phased-out in September 2009.

Should departments or individual users have a genuine need to continue using the dial-up modem service for work /study-related activities, please channel the request via your Departmental CLO to Mr Ken Chung (Ext. 5920, e-mail: 'itkchung’) or Dr Kent Leung (Ext. 5922, e-mail: 'itkent') by 7 August 2009 for discussions on possible alternative solutions.
 
 


 
Updated Price Lists for Microsoft and Adobe Software Licences
 

 

In addition to the software licences centrally co-ordinated and distributed by ITS, agreements have also been made with software vendors for departments to purchase some commonly-used software licences at prices lower than the regular packages.

 

The updated price lists for the Microsoft (under MS Open Licence Programme) and Adobe software licences (under Adobe Open Options Contractual Licensing Programme) are available under the ITS website and could be retrieved below:

Microsoft Software

For purchase of MS software licences under the MS Open Licence Programme, please raise PR to the Finance Office for placing order with Microware Limited. For easy reference, please quote the JUCC (Joint Universities Computer Centre) Tender No. 398 in the PR.

Adobe Software
