PolyU Development Fund

The PolyU Development Fund was set up to secure funding resources to support projects and initiatives conducive to the academic and institutional development of PolyU. Its objectives are three-fold: 

  • Enhancing the quality of teaching and learning through the improvement of facilities and related resources.
  • Furthering applied research in support of business and industrial enterprises, and the professional and public sectors.
  • Furthering the all-round development of PolyU students and enhancing their competitiveness.

Academic Development

Areas of excellence
To achieve international standing, PolyU has identified a number of “Areas of Strategic Development” among its strongest disciplines to which extra resources are dedicated to ensure they become “Areas of Excellence” by regional or international standards.

Applied research
Over the years, PolyU has developed close and valuable links with the industrial and commercial sectors, including exclusive partnerships centring on major research initiatives. The University’s well-established strength in applied research is evidenced by the quality and quantity of resulting products and processes and the benefits for both businesses and end-users.

Institution Development
Constantly reviewing its needs for academic support facilities and services, PolyU has launched a host of construction projects in recent years. Currently under planning is the Phase 8 Development to be built to the northwest of the campus. In addition, two other ongoing new projects, i.e. new Design Centre within campus and a teaching and research hotel in Tsimshatsui, will help create an environment to meet the requirements of the new “3+3+4” academic system and other academic development needs.

Student Development Fund

To enhance the competitive edge for our students and the community, PolyU has put in place a range of programmes conducive to the all-round development of students and an increased alertness to and ability in tackling challenges in the workplace upon their graduation.

Preferred Graduates Development Programme (PGDP)
Introduced in 1997, this is a placement programme that helps to expose our students to actual working environment in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and overseas before their graduation. Since its launch, PGDP has arranged more than 9,000 placements for students to gain practical work experience and nurture their professional skills. With a view to broadening students’ global outlook, placements are arranged both locally and overseas.

Feedback from Partner Companies and Students

Community Service Learning Programme (CSLP)

The Programme was launched in 2004 to foster students’ social commitment and responsibility through serving the community with their professional knowledge. With the concerted efforts of various academic and administrative departments on campus, students are encouraged to initiate and organize Community Service Learning Projects. In 2006/07, 44 projects were completed by 1,000 students and supervising staff, serving over 22,500 people in need in Hong Kong and on the Chinese mainland.

Exchange Scholarship

PolyU exchanges students with around 120 renowned universities in 19 countries. Every year, the University receives more than 400 exchange students and sends forth an equivalent number of PolyU students abroad.

Our Student Exchange Programme has proven to be most effective in enhancing students’ all-round development and global outlook. In particular, this Programme helps to enhance the competitive edge of our students, internationalize our campus and enable students in need to gain study experience abroad.
