Five outstanding alumni of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) have been selected for the University's "1999 Outstanding Alumni Award" in recognition of their illustrious professional accomplishments and tremendous contributions to their alma mater and the community.

Brief Biography of the awardees:
A
1981 graduate from the course of Higher Diploma in Design (Product) of
the former Hong Kong Polytechnic, Mr. Chan is one of the most reputable
industrial designers in Hong Kong. He has made tremendous contributions
to promoting the image of Hong Kong original products. His collection
is the first Hong Kong designer product featuring at the Museum Store of
Musée du Louvre in Paris and Museum of Modern Art in New York. His
distinguished creativity and professionalism have earned him numerous international
and local design honours. He devotes much of his time to nurturing
the young generation of designers. Among his many contributions, he initiated
a design scholarship for the design students in both Hong Kong and the
Mainland. As the Founding Chairman of the School of Design Alumni
Association, he has successfully helped the alma mater to build up strong
links with the design graduates. He was honoured with the Outstanding
Young Persons Award in 1995, Artist of the Year in 1997 and Young Entrepreneur
of 1998.
A 1982 graduate from the course of Associateship in Building Technology and Management of the former Hong Kong Polytechnic, Dr. Cheung is one of the most distinguished civil and structural engineers in Hong Kong and the founder of Professional Engineering Ltd., which is renowned for offering high quality and cost-effective services. He has made significant contributions to introducing and promoting the latest world-class technologies for reinforced concrete structures in Hong Kong. His illustrious career and his many contributions to the profession have won him many honours and the high respect of his peers. He was awarded Fellowship by 12 professional institutions. He has also helped promote the awareness of occupational safety and health for various industries by serving on more than 20 government committees, community service and professional bodies.

Lily Chiang
A
1993 graduate awarded with the Doctor of Philosophy in Manufacturing Engineering
of the former Hong Kong Polytechnic, Dr. Chiang is a well-known industrialist
and is currently the Executive Director of The Chen Hsong Group, one of
the world's largest manufacturers of injection moulding machines capturing
10 per cent of the world's market share. She has contributed a lot
to Hong Kong's manufacturing industries and the development of advanced
technologies through her active participation in the Plastic Technology
Centre, the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of
Hong Kong Industries. Furthermore, Dr. Chiang has been actively involved
in supporting further development of young talents in the industry through
various sponsorships and donations to the PolyU, as well as to other local
tertiary institutions.
A 1970 graduate from the course of Higher Diploma in Surveying/ Building Technology of the former Hong Kong Technical College, Mr. Lee has managed over 200 development projects and is the Managing Director of David C Lee Surveyors Ltd. With his wealth of professional expertise and experience, he has made immense contributions to improving the quality standard of buildings in Hong Kong and promoting the status of surveying profession through his involvement in various governmental boards and committees. Among his many affiliations, Mr. Lee is the Vice-Chairman of the Hong Kong Housing Society. Mr. Lee's enthusiasm in helping the development of his alma mater is well reflected in his active participation in different committees of the University. He is currently a member of both the PolyU Council and the PolyU Estates Committee.
Mr. Poon graduated with Distinction in 1962 from the course of Higher Certificate in Electrical Engineering of the former Hong Kong Technical College and obtained another Higher Certificate in Mechanical Engineering in 1964. He is currently the Managing Director of Analogue Group of Companies, which comprises eight companies in Hong Kong, the Mainland of China, Canada and Italy. With more than 30 years' experience in engineering, Mr. Poon is generous in offering his expertise to serve the profession. He is the President of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. He has also contributed significantly towards the accreditation of engineering degrees, from which the PolyU and other local tertiary institutions have benefited immensely. Apart from his involvement in professional-related public service, he also serves on the Energy Advisory Committee, Advisory Council on Environment, Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal Panel and Tourism Development Steering Committee.
