Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award 1997

Six distinguished graduates of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) have been selected as the winners of the "Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award 1997". The awardees (in alphabetical order) are:

* Mr. Leung Chung-ying, Managing Director of C.Y. Leung & Company Ltd. and member of the Provisional Legislative Council and of the first Executive Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region;
* Mr. Ng Sai-ho, Director of Projects of the Hong Kong Housing Society;
* Dr. Ng Tat-lun, Managing Director of Sonca Products Ltd;
* Miss Vivienne Tam, world famous fashion designer;
* Dr. Chris Wong Ho-ching, Director of PolyU's Industrial Centre; and
* The late Dr. Samuel Wong Ping-wai, Legislative Councillor and Managing Partner of Associated Consulting Engineers.

  Brief Biography of the awardees:


Mr. Leung Chung-ying  

A 1974 graduate from the course of Higher Diploma in Surveying of the former Hong Kong Polytechnic, Mr. Leung is the Managing Director and a founder of C. Y. Leung & Company Ltd., one of the largest real estate consultancies in Hong Kong with 10 offices in the Asian region and an office staff of 500. He has served on nearly all land-related committees in Hong Kong and has been actively involved in community services both in Hong Kong and in mainland China. He is one of the few persons who sit on both the Provisional Legislative Council and the first Executive Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. He was honoured with the Outstanding Young Persons Award in 1988 and is a founding member of the Court of the PolyU.

Mr. Ng Sai-ho

A 1962 graduate from the course of Diploma in Building of the former Hong Kong Technical College, Mr. Ng is one of the most reputable structural engineers in Hong Kong and is currently Director of Projects of the Hong Kong Housing Society. He has made tremendous contributions to promoting the status of engineers in the building and construction industry. His distinguished service to the structural engineering profession has earned him the 1996 Lewis Kent Award. An ardent supporter of the PolyU's alumni activities, Mr. Ng has been a Committee Member of the Hong Kong Polytechnic Building Association for 20 years and was Chairman of the Association from 1990 to 1992. Mr. Ng has also been Chairman of the PolyU's Department of Civil and Structural Engineering Advisory Committee since 1993.

Dr. Ng Tat-lun

Dr. Ng graduated from the former Hong Kong Technical College with a Diploma in Production Engineering in 1962 and a Diploma in Management Studies in 1969. He is presently Managing Director of Sonca Products Ltd., which employs more than 2,200 workers in Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China. Over the years, Dr. Ng has made significant contributions to the development of Hong Kong's manufacturing industry through his active participation in more than 22 government committees, community service and professional bodies in the areas of vocational training, industrial & technology development, and occupational health & safety. Among his many affiliations, Dr. Ng is Deputy Chairman of the Hong Kong Vocational Training Council, Vice-Chairman of the Occupational Safety and Health Council, and Chairman of the PolyU's Industrial Centre Steering Committee. In honour of his enormous contributions to the society and his profession, Dr. Ng was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1992 and was honoured with an MBE in 1995.

Miss Vivienne Tam

Miss Tam graduated with Distinction in 1978 from the Higher Diploma course in Design of the former Hong Kong Polytechnic. She is one of the few Hong Kong-bred fashion designers who have made an international name in the worldwide fashion scene. Her outstanding innovation in marrying Chinese traditions with a modern edge has made her one of the best known Asian designers in New York. Her fashion collection is marketed in many prominent stores not only in the U.S. and Europe, but also in Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Australia and Taiwan. Furthermore, Miss Tam is also building her own network of boutiques with four currently in Hong Kong and more planned in New York and London. Although Miss Tam is based in New York, she maintains regular and close contact with students of the PolyU's School of Design to provide them with her valuable experience in fashion design and promotion.

Dr. Chris Wong Ho-ching

A 1969 graduate from the course of Higher Diploma in Electrical Engineering of the former Hong Kong Technical College, Dr. Wong is currently Director of the PolyU's Industrial Centre. Under the able leadership of Dr. Wong, the PolyU's Industrial Centre has won enviable reputation as a successful learning factory for student engineers and a model for similar local and overseas establishments. Dr. Wong has more than 25 years of experience in engineering and systems integration, technical education, and business and corporate management. He was President of the Hong Kong Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology from 1994 to 1996, President of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (HK) from 1985 to 1987 and Vice-President of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (USA) from 1994 to 1996. He was a recipient of the 1987 Outstanding Young Persons Award and also the first Hong Kong resident to receive the Fellow Award of the US-based Institute of Industrial Engineers.

The late Dr. Samuel Wong Ping-wai (1937-1997)

A 1961 graduate from the course of Diploma in Mechanical Engineering of the former Hong Kong Technical College, Dr. Wong was a member of the Legislative Council during 1991-1997, representing the Engineering Constituency. His illustrious engineering career was recognized by the Fellowship of the main professional institutions in the Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Building Services Engineering fields. He was a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, UK, one of eight currently residing in Hong Kong. He had devoted much of his time to public services, in the areas of education and training, town planning, land development, environment, and transport. He was currently a member of the Court of the PolyU. For his many community services, where he invariably had left his marks of distinction, Dr. Wong was awarded an MBE in 1990 and an OBE in 1997. He was also made a Justice of the Peace in 1986. Dr. Wong unfortunately passed away in June, 1997.
